PREFACE

At length, the Pentateuch of Moses being finished, as men released from a great debt of interest, we set our hand to Jesus the son of Nave, etc. God gave to Jesus Christ the name *which is above every name*: and this is *Jesus.* Therefore *in the name of Jesus every knee is bowed, of things in heaven, of things on earth, and of things under the earth.* And because this is the name above every name, therefore in no generations before was it named. In Genesis we read of many just men, and not one of them was named Jesus. In Exodus I find this for the first time, etc., *as far as* while we sin, and the vices of the passions reign in us, although, our idols left behind, we seem to have gone out from Egypt, yet the reproach of Egypt has not been taken away from us. But if thou shalt have been circumcised a second time, and shalt have cut away from thee every vice, of anger, of pride, of envy, of lust and the like, the reproaches of Egypt shall be wiped away, and, carried over into the land of promise, thou shalt receive the heavenly inheritance through Jesus Christ our Lord.
