PROLOGUE OF BLESSED JEROME

PROEM OF LUKE ON HIS OWN GOSPEL

VERS. 1.-- *Forasmuch indeed,* etc. Luke, concerning all the things which Jesus did and taught, etc., *as far as* they were setting a narrative in order rather than weaving the truth of history.VERS. 3.-- *All things.* Not all the things which he had attained, but out of all those which he judges apt for confirming the faith of his readers. For of set purpose he passes over many things which the others tell, so that a varied grace might shine out in the Gospel, and that in the several books the marvels of the mysteries and of the deeds might stand out, each by certain things of its own. *Theophilus.* Theophilus, one loving God, etc., *as far as* he ought to know the faith of the everlasting Godhead and the order of his dispensation in time.
